Bamboo Electric Toothbrush

Why it helps

This is the one change on the list with the clearest benefit behind it. Powered toothbrushes have consistently been found to remove more plaque and reduce gum inflammation more than manual brushing, across a large body of trials. It is not a small difference, and it comes from the brush doing the work rather than you doing it faster.

Most electric toothbrushes are moulded plastic that you replace every few years. This one is bamboo — a grass that regrows from its own roots in a season — with heads that are plant-based and recyclable rather than another piece of plastic in the bin every three months. Rechargeable, so there is no battery to buy and throw away either.

The five modes

Clean — everyday brushing.
White — a deeper clean for surface stains.
Polish — for the front teeth.
Polish and massage — gentler, for gum care.
Sensitive — reduced intensity for sensitive teeth and gums.

On the charcoal bristles

Charcoal-infused bristles are common and they look good, but we are not going to tell you they whiten teeth or draw out toxins — there is no good evidence for either. Any whitening you notice comes from the brushing itself lifting surface stains, which is what the White mode is for.

Care

Waterproof, so rinse it under the tap and use it in the shower if you like. Change the head every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay, and stand it upright to dry between uses.
